Jammu, Mar 06: In a bold move to safeguard press freedom, Bashir Ahmad Veeri, a National Conference legislator from Bijbehara, has strongly criticized the recent detentions of journalists in Jammu and Kashmir, labeling them as unjust and undemocratic.
During a session in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Veeri as per The Web Story /The Varmul Post highlighted the critical role of a free press in upholding democratic values and expressed deep concern over the growing trend of silencing journalists through arbitrary arrests.
He urged Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to take immediate action to ensure that journalists are protected and allowed to work without fear of reprisal.
Veeri referenced a recent incident in Anantnag’s Rani Bagh, where the illegal felling of iconic chinar trees sparked widespread public anger. Instead of addressing the environmental crime, the district administration reportedly targeted journalists who had exposed the issue, leading to their detention. Veeri condemned this action, calling it a blatant attempt to suppress the truth and intimidate the media.
The legislator emphasized that such actions not only undermine press freedom but also erode public trust in democratic institutions. He called for accountability and urged the Speaker to intervene to prevent further harassment of journalists. Veeri’s impassioned plea has reignited the debate on the importance of protecting journalists in conflict zones like Jammu and Kashmir, where press freedom is increasingly under threat.
